Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
