At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
